Apple Loses Top AI Talent as Meta Strengthens Superintelligence Team

Meta Platforms Inc. has recruited two prominent artificial intelligence researchers, Mark Lee and Tom Gunter, from Apple Inc.'s Foundation Models team to bolster its Superintelligence Labs division. This development follows Meta's earlier acquisition of Ruoming Pang, the former head of Apple's Foundation Models group, who was enticed with a compensation package exceeding $200 million over several years. Pang oversaw developing large language models integral to Apple Intelligence features, including email summaries, priority notifications, and generative emoji tools.

Mark Lee, identified as Pang's initial hire at Apple, departed the company recently and has commenced employment at Meta. Tom Gunter, a distinguished engineer and one of the most senior members of Apple's AI team, left Apple last month, briefly affiliated with another AI startup, and is scheduled to join Meta in Menlo Park shortly. Specific compensation details for Lee and Gunter remain undisclosed, though Meta's approach underscores its substantial investments in attracting elite talent.

These hires align with Meta Chief Executive Officer Mark Zuckerberg's strategic emphasis on artificial intelligence as the organization's primary focus, involving the construction of extensive AI data centers at hundreds of billions of dollars and aggressive recruitment from competitors such as OpenAI and Google. For Apple, the departures exacerbate internal challenges within its AI division, including declining morale among engineers who perceive themselves as scapegoats for recent setbacks, and deliberations over transitioning from proprietary models to third-party solutions provided by entities like OpenAI or Anthropic for enhancements to features such as Siri. In response, Apple has extended salary increases to select engineers, albeit at levels considerably below Meta's offers, as it seeks to retain remaining personnel amid this competitive talent landscape.
